What is a memecoin?

A memecoin is a cryptocurrency built around a joke, a mascot, or an internet trend rather than a technical product. Dogecoin (the Shiba Inu dog) started the category; Shiba Inu, Pepe and countless others followed.

What gives them value?

Mostly attention and community. A memecoin can soar when a crowd (or a celebrity) rallies behind it — and collapse just as fast when interest fades. There's usually little underlying product, so price is driven almost entirely by hype and momentum.

Why they're so risky

Memecoins are among the most volatile things in all of crypto. Many are created in minutes, some are outright scams ("rug pulls," where creators vanish with the money), and the vast majority eventually go to near zero. For every story of a big win, there are countless quiet losses.

If you look anyway

Treat any memecoin as money you're fully prepared to lose, and be skeptical of anyone promising guaranteed gains. You can watch the top memecoins live on our memecoin page — as data, never as advice.
