What Is a Stock Screener and How to Use One
A stock screener is a tool that filters the thousands of stocks in the market down to just the ones that meet conditions you choose — like price, volume, or how much they moved today. It turns an impossible haystack into a short, useful list.
What a screener actually does
There are thousands of listed stocks. Nobody can watch them all. A screener applies filters and returns only the matches, so instead of scanning everything you look at a focused list. Common filters include:
- Price — e.g. only stocks between $1 and $20.
- Volume — only stocks trading enough shares to be liquid.
- Percent change — the day's biggest gainers or losers.
- Gaps — stocks that opened far from the prior close.
- Market cap — company size, from small caps to mega-caps.
How to read the results
A screener tells you what stands out, not why. A stock topping a gainers list could be reacting to earnings, news, or simply momentum. So the results are a starting point, not an answer:
- Use the screen to find candidates that match what you're studying.
- Look at price and volume together — a big move on heavy volume means more than the same move on light volume.
- Check the news and the chart before drawing any conclusion.
A word on quality of filters
The best beginner habit is to keep screens simple and meaningful. One or two well-chosen filters (say, price range plus a minimum volume) beat a dozen filters that leave you with a list you don't understand. Screens describe what happened — they are never buy or sell signals.

Frequently asked
What is a stock screener?
A stock screener is a tool that filters the entire market down to the stocks that meet criteria you set — such as price range, minimum volume, percentage change or market cap — so you can focus on a short, relevant list instead of thousands of names.
How do you use a stock screener as a beginner?
Start with one or two meaningful filters (for example a price range plus a minimum volume), read the resulting list as candidates rather than answers, then check each stock's volume, news and chart before drawing any conclusion.
Are stock screener results buy or sell signals?
No. A screener only describes what stands out — the biggest movers, gaps or most-active names. It tells you what happened, not what to do. Always research a stock before making any decision.
Does Trader Club have a free stock screener?
Yes. Trader Club publishes free, plain-English small-cap screeners — biggest gainers, losers, gap-ups, gap-downs, most active and price streaks — rebuilt every trading day from a full end-of-day market scan.
